The future relationship between man and machine cannot be known with certainty. In 1965, I. J. Good predicted an intelligence explosion, the idea that a sufficiently smart artificial intelligence (AI) would be able to rewrite its programming, improve itself and so increase its own intelligence even further. Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking has gone as far as to suggest that “the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race”. Regarding the speed of progress in AI, Elon Musk has recently noted that “it is growing at a pace close to exponential”. There are others, however, who generally assume with less concern that AI can be controlled as a useful capacity to safely service humanity. Therein, I remain skeptical.
